Episode 12 – July 28th

The English Beep

13 teams battled to the death for space and points and spacepoints at this month’s trivia

Do you know this song?

How about this song?

July’s game was heavy on the audio, with our polarizing non-video game round worth double points!  This month also saw the return of WELCO METOT HENEX TLEVEL, some much loved arcade action, and one of our highest turnouts of the year!

How about that Photoshop job, eh? EH???

13 teams created a cash prize pool of $65, and our half-time prize pool consisted of brand new prizes, including a not-quite-a-mii Luigi figure, a sealed Max Pro Deck Armor featuring Street Fighter art, and a factory sealed copy of [amazon text=NBA Inside Drive 2002&asin=B00005UVLM] (not to mention free beer)!

Round 1 (VIDEOGAMES) was an average round, with teams performing well across the board, except for question 8, which had only TWO teams answer correctly!  Kudos to Ninja Baseball Batman and Air Zonk!

Next up, round 2 featured magazine ads for games, with the names of the games carefully scrubbed out by your humble host!  WELCO METOT HENEX TLEVEL was a great round to help debut the return of the projected screen (something long asked for by teams that sit in the back of the room).  The Smash Bros. earned a small victory by being one of a handful of teams that correctly identified Croc 2 as one of the more obscure games.  Nobody got our last question, can you?  (hint: it’s not Contra)

Next up, the non-video game round. This month’s round, “The English Beep,” was one of the few non-videogame rounds to feature double points!  Teams could earn 1 point for correctly naming the band, and another point for the title of the song.  Some of our more game-savvy teams took umbrage at the weight of a double-point non-VG round, but despite some teams earning as many as 14 points in the round, in the end the rankings would not have changed much.  Really, the most interesting results from this round are A) more people knew the Buzzcocks than I expected, B) Team: Rocket got the One Direction question correct, and C) Almost everybody knows the song “Just Can’t Get Enough,” but only Cleveland Is On Fire and a few other teams know who actually performs it.

Before starting the second half of trivia, we had our half-time round.  This round is normally a name-as-many-things-as-you-can-in-90-seconds type category, but this month we had a LIGHTNING ROUND!  Teams were given two things, and had to guess which came first.  We powered through 10 questions in 90 seconds.  Everyone did pretty well, but only Bill Cosby Dating Simulator got all 10 answers correct! (The name of the round, btw, is an homage to a great trivia podcast hosted by Karen Chu and Wired’s Chris Kohler.  Give it a listen!)

Round 4, EVO 2015 was a good round overall for teams. Nerds Collide and Super Ultra Trivia Team 2.5 HD Remix Tournament Edition both gained some ground thanks to their in depth knowledge of fighting game music and possibly Whiz Kalifa.

Our video round this month was also our Player’s Choice Round!  Last month’s Player’s choice winners was The Woodmen’s Favorite Team, aka Juans of Gamelon.  The Juans chose SHMUPS as their category.  We took it upon ourselves to make the round a bit challenging, and we succeeded!  Round 5 was the only round this month where teams got zero points (Top Gun, Top Gun 2, Top Gun 3, and Top Gun: The Re-Gunnening were not represented, sorry Smash Bros!)

Our Final Round, “All American” Games, asked teams to identify games by plot details that included real-world locations somewhere in these United States.  Two Girls One Q (hopefully only a Star Trek reference) and The Rumble Pak both gained ground with some careful play, while others *Cough*ClevelandOnFire*Cough* took a ‘go big or go home’ strategy, tossing caution to the wind.

In the end, some of the big swings in round 6 only served to further the gap as Bill Cosby Dating Simulator, Air Zonk, and #FreeAva took the top three spots with dominating scores and cash prizes!  Ninja Baseball Batman was on the bubble this month, with the league leading Woodmen coming in fifth!  Congratulations to all the teams who played this month’s game, and thanks for coming out and playing!

Cleveland On Fire has earned the right to choose our next player’s choice round, which is TBA. We look forward to seeing everyone at July’s game!
