Ice to Meet You

Your Face Is A Trivia Team

2016 drew to a close as 6 grizzled teams prepared for the worst in our final battle of the year.  Thankfully, everyone made it out alive, though some teams left with more points than others.

The 6 teams created a cash prize pool of $30, and our half-time prize pool consisted of some brand new Xbox One titles, some video game tchotchkes, and of course free drinks from the bar!

Round 1 challenged teams to answer questions from This Month in Video Games! No team scored perfectly in the opening round, but league team Pac Man Christmas 2: Happy Juannikah (aka The Juans of Gamelon) outperformed everyone else with 7 out of 8 correct answers.

Round 2 was our graphic round, aptly named Ice Levels! It was league team The Woodmen‘s turn to get a perfect score by naming all 8 games from screenshots of the icy levels.  This month, Do You Want to Continue joined The Woodmen and The Juans with perfect scores going into round 3.

Our non-video game round was a rare double-points round and a video round! Teams were tasked with naming both the musical and the year it was released!  Out of a possible 16 points, Game… Blouses performed best, with 8 points (tied with Do You Want to Continue).  At the half-time break, we had a close game, with three teams tied for 2nd with 20 points each, and the Juans of Gamelon leading the pack by just 1 point!

Our half-time lightning round using the new format earned many people some great half-time swag and free drinks.  Curious about the new format?  You’ll have to come out to the next game to find out!

Round 4, our new Spotlight round was another graphic round AND another double points round!  This round featured Strategy Games on Handhelds!  Teams fought valiantly to identify both the franchise, and title of each game, but nobody managed a perfect score.

Round 5, Spiritual Successors was our video round.  We showed clips of video games that were either lesser known or spiritual successors to popular video games, and asked for the name of the franchise and the name of the spiritual successor.  The Woodmen cleaned up in this round, capturing 14 points!  The Spoony Bards and Do You Want to Continue also fared well in this round, gathering 9 points each.

Our final round, featured the shadow world of Unlockable Characters. Subtle clues about each game led teams down the path of unlocking hidden players in popular games, but no one managed to open all 5 options.

In the end, The Woodmen took down the evening by a scant point and the Juans of Gamelon right on their heels!  Congratulations to all the teams who played this month’s game, and thanks for coming out and playing!

Team Cheese (candidates for best team name this year) earned the honor of naming a round in January’s game.

The Player’s Choice round for January is Pokemon (Generations 2-7)!
