Episode 02 – December 29th

Spiel Des Jahres

(Board) Game of the Year

The last Question Block Trivia game of 2015 ended with 6 teams (4 league) competing at Wilde Rover in that glorious post-Christmas, pre-New Years’  neutral zone, with season 03 champions The Woodmen coming out on top!

Who’s That Pokemon?

The teams created a cash prize pool of $30, and our half-time prize pool consisted of some rare candy, including a knitted master ball, a sealed copy of Selected scenes from Psychonauts (I still don’t know what’s actually on that disc), and a Ganondorf action figure (not to mention free beer)!

Round 1 was our old Standby, Video Games!  Where Is Everybody, aka Richard’s Team, got an early lead thanks to the many pokemon-based bonus points available in this round.

Next up, round 2 was all about Miis!  Players were given images of video game characters transformed into Miis, (courtesy of MiiCharacters.com), and had to name the character.  Most teams scored well on this round, with Earthbound 64 and The Woodmen tied for 2nd place.

Round 3, our non-video game round, was also our Player’s Choice, chosen by last month’s team Rad Scorpians, aka Super Ultra Trivia Team 2.5 HD Remix: Tournament Edition.  This was German Board Game of the Year!  The round was also a double points round, with most teams scoring around half; teams had to guess the name of the game based on a clue, then also guess the year in which the game won GOTY.  Tough round, but most teams did admirably!

Can you name the three games that feature Old St. Nick here?

By the way, here’s our Half-Time Bonus Question on Facebook:

Which game won Giant Bomb’s 2015 award for Best Music?

Before starting the second half of trivia, we had our half-time round.  This month we asked teams to name NES games that appeared in Animal Crossing games.  You can find the whole list (along with some interesting trivia about how to get them) here.

CVC went on to become a little company called America Online

Round 4, our traditional audio round, went retro again this month, featuring Neo Geo Games, one of our player-requested rounds from the comments section on the final page.

Our video round this month was a double-point round.  Video Game Voice Actors was the category.  Teams were shown a clip from a video game that features a famous actor voicing or narrating a scene.  Getting the actor’s name right earned teams 1 point, and guessing the name of the game featured in the clip netted another point.  Shower Dad HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (known in league circles as Juans of Gamelon) scored very well in this round, only missing 1 point.

Our Final Round, Who needs “The Internet” Anyways? featured a series of questions about networking services for console games, going all the way back to 1981!  As in previous seasons, the final round questions increase in value from 1 to 5, with incorrect answers counting against a team’s final score.  With a max possible score of 15 points, Earthbound 64 and Shower Dad HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue did best, with 11 points each.

In the end, The Woodmen took the crown for the last game of 2015!  Congratulations to all the teams who played this month’s game, and thanks for coming out and playing!

Team Blank edged out the 5th place team by 2 points to earn the honor of naming a round in December’s game.  The Player’s Choice round is HALO! Happy New Year to all the teams, and good luck!

  1. When Round 2’s themes was announced, we were like “I’ll be disappointed if Duck Tales, Majora’s Mask, and Destiny aren’t there.” Lo and behold they were.
